  1. And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
  2. When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
  3. And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.
  4. And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.
  5. But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
  1. Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved."
  2. This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.
  3. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the brothers very glad.
  4. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them.
  5. Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, "The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses."

  1. And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
  2. And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
  3. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
  4. And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
  5. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
  1. The apostles and elders met to consider this question.
  2. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.
  3. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
  4. He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.
  5. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear?

  2. Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
  3. And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
  4. Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
  5. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
  1. No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."
  2. The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.
  3. When they finished, James spoke up: "Brothers, listen to me.
  4. Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.

  1. For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
  2. Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
  3. And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:
  4. Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
  5. It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
  1. For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath."
  2. Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers.
  3. With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings.
  4. We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said.
  5. So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul--

  1. men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  2. Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing.
